Liverpool’s very own Orwellian Big Brother(s), The Sneaky Nixons, are back. With their scrawled trademark staring at locals like Eckleberg’s Eyes from side streets all over the city, focus now shifts onto the renegade troupe themselves with new release, ‘Baby Just Do What You Got To!’.
Crashing cymbals and catchy guitar riffs that would make a young Alex Turner’s ears prick, introduce a track rife with youthful nerve. Following the example of early noughties indie, the track traverses that finest line of time signatures with all the swaggering bombast of a drunkard wrestling with the cruel mistress of gravity. The Lyrics too, wrestle with a different kind of mistress. Tales of chasing girls and flawed relationships take precedence over any politically charged polemic you may expect, given the controversial former-president from where the band derives their name.
Overall a track of real substance and backbone, only partially let down by The Nixon’s heavy borrowing from styles of the past – though perhaps not enough to start coining this Baby-gate just yet…
