Sam Smith to sing new Bond Theme

Smith told Nick Grimshaw he and Jimmy Napes wrote Writing’s on the Wall in just 20 minutes.

The 23-year-old Grammy winner admitted this morning on BBC Radio 1 that he recorded the song as long ago as January after a meeting with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and had a hard time keeping it a secret.

He told Jo Whiley last week he was “definitely not” working on the theme for new Bond film Spectre in an effort to dispel rumours.

While Smith was the bookies choice, Ellie Goulding, Lana del Rey and Radiohead were all rumoured, with Goulding tweeting what some thought may be a clue in July.

Smith is the first male solo artist to sing the theme since Tom Jones in 1965.  He has often vocalised his admiration for Adele and there is already speculation surrounding whether he will follow in her Oscar-winning footsteps.

Writing’s on the Wall is available for pre-order and is due for release on September 25th.
